Same day dental implants: what to expect on the day

What are same day dental implants?

Same day dental implants place a provisional, temporary tooth or teeth on the same visit as the implant surgery, instead of leaving the area empty while it heals. The final, finished teeth come later, once the bone has fully healed around the implants. It is often called immediate loading.

This differs from the traditional staged approach, where implants heal for months, untouched, before any tooth is attached. Same day teeth still need that healing time; they simply give you something to chew and smile with in the meantime, when conditions allow. Who can have same-day teeth?

Whether same-day teeth are possible depends on how firmly each implant sits in the bone right after it is placed, which is checked during surgery, not decided beforehand. Enough bone volume, a healthy bite and general health that supports healing also matter. Heavy grinding can work against a stable result early on.

It can apply to a single tooth, several teeth, or a full arch, including the All-on-4® concept, which often uses same-day teeth when the implants are stable enough. Not everyone qualifies, and that is decided case by case.

How does immediate loading work?

After the implant is placed, it is tested for stability, essentially how firmly it resists movement in the bone. If it passes that test, a lightweight provisional tooth or bridge is attached the same day, shaped to stay out of heavy contact with the opposite teeth while healing.

What happens after you leave with temporary teeth?

The provisional teeth let you eat, speak and smile while the implants heal underneath, though they are not meant for hard chewing. Follow-up visits check the implants and the fit of the provisional over the following months. The final teeth are made once healing is confirmed.

Your general dentist or restorative dentist typically makes the final crown, bridge or denture once the implants are ready to carry it, working from the plan set during implant treatment.

What can you eat while implants heal?

A soft diet protects the provisional teeth and the healing implants underneath for a number of weeks. Foods like eggs, fish, pasta, cooked vegetables and soups are easier on new implants than anything hard, sticky or chewy. Biting directly into firm foods, such as apples or crusty bread, is best avoided during this time.

Your team lets you know when it's reasonable to add firmer foods back in, since healing time varies from person to person.

What are the risks of same-day implants?

Same-day teeth add a small amount of extra risk on top of standard implant surgery, mainly because the implant is put to light use before it has fully healed. Excess force on a provisional tooth too soon can affect how well the implant bonds with the bone. That is why provisionals are shaped to avoid heavy contact at first.

If an implant isn't stable enough on the day, a staged plan with temporary tooth options worn over the healing period is the safer fallback, not a failure of the plan. Waiting, when it's recommended, protects the long-term result.

What to expect

1. Examination and imaging

   We check your teeth, gums, bite and bone, and often take a 3D scan to see if same-day teeth may be possible.

2. Implant placement

   The implant or implants are placed under local anesthetic, and a failing tooth can sometimes be removed at the same visit.

3. Stability check

   Each implant is tested for firmness right after placement, which decides whether a provisional tooth can go on that day.

4. Provisional teeth, if stable

   A lightweight provisional is attached and shaped to avoid heavy chewing while the bone heals.

5. Healing and final teeth

   Over the following months, the bone heals around the implants, and your dentist then makes the final teeth.
